چکیده

In some organizational applications, the principle of allocation (PoA) and scale advantage (SA) oppose each other. While PoA implies that organizations with wide niches get punished, SA holds that large organizations gain an advantage because of scale efficiencies. The opposition occurs because many large organizations also possess wide niches. However, analyzing these theoretical mechanisms implies a possible trade-off between niche width and size: if both PoA and SA are strong, then organizations must be either focused or large to survive, resulting in a dual market structure, as proposed by the theory of resource partitioning. This article presents a computational model used to study this possible trade-off, and investigates the properties of organizational populations with low/high SA and low/high PoA. The model generates three expected core “corner” solutions: (1) the dominance of large organizations in the strong SA setting; (2) the proliferation of narrow-niche organizations in the strong PoA setting; and (3) a bifurcated or dual market structure if both SA and PoA are present. The model also allows us to identify circumstances under which narrow-niche (specialists) or wide-niche (generalists) organizations thrive. We also use the model to examine the claim that concentrated resource distributions are more likely to generate partitioned or bifurcated populations. We also investigate the consequences of environments comprised of ordered versus unordered positions.

Ecological release from interspecific competition leads to decoupled changes in population and individual niche width

A species's niche width reflects a balance between the diversifying effects of intraspecific competition and the constraining effects of interspecific competition. This balance shifts when a species from a competitive environment invades a depauperate habitat where interspecific competition is reduced. The resulting ecological release permits population niche expansion, via increased individual...

The Ecology of Strategic Positioning: Mutualism, Competition and Inertia

We develop an ecological theory of the strategic positioning of all firms in an organizational population across its evolution. Drawing on established ecological theories and notions of strategic positioning from the management literature, we contend that processes of mutualism, competition, and inertia shape the propensity of firms to move in the market space. Accordingly, we derive hypotheses...

THE ECOLOGY OF NICHE-WIDTH STRATEGIES Generalists, polymorphists and specialists in the UK motorcycle industry from 1895 to 1993*

A central issue in the study of organizations relates to the explanation of the genesis of organizational diversity. In this context, niche-width theory deals with the consequences for organizational form survival of intertemporal selection processes in industries that feature environmental variation over time. Drawing from evolutionary biology, the theory links environmental change patterns to...

The Logic of Organizational Markets: Thinking Through Resource Partitioning Theory

Resource partitioning theory claims that “Increasing concentration enhances the life chances of specialist organizations.” We systematically think through this theory, specify implicit background assumptions, sharpen concepts, and rigorously check the theory’s logic. As a result, we increase the theory’s explanatory power, and claim— contrary to received opinion—that under certain general condi...

Evolution of niche width and adaptive diversification.

Theoretical models suggest that resource competition can lead to the adaptive splitting of consumer populations into diverging lineages, that is, to adaptive diversification. In general, diversification is likely if consumers use only a narrow range of resources and thus have a small niche width. Here we use analytical and numerical methods to study the consequences for diversification if the n...
